HVAC Systems & Services

Most HVAC professionals recommend servicing your system at least twice a year — once before the cooling season (spring) and once before the heating season (fall). Regular maintenance keeps your system running efficiently, extends its lifespan, and prevents costly breakdowns.
Common signs include: unusual noises (banging, rattling, or squealing), weak or uneven airflow, the system blowing hot air when set to cool (or vice versa), frequent cycling on/off, significantly higher energy bills, strange odors, or visible ice on the unit. If you notice any of these, contact an HVAC professional promptly.
With proper maintenance, most air conditioners last 15-20 years and furnaces 20-30 years. Heat pumps typically last 15-20 years. Regular professional maintenance can extend your system's life significantly. If your system is over 15 years old and requiring frequent repairs, it may be more cost-effective to replace it.
A furnace generates heat by burning fuel (gas, oil) or using electric resistance heating. A heat pump moves heat — it can extract heat from outside air even in cold weather to heat your home, and reverse the process to cool in summer. Heat pumps are generally more energy-efficient in moderate climates, while furnaces are often better for very cold regions.
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures cooling efficiency. Higher SEER means more efficient. The federal minimum is 14 SEER (13 in northern states). For the best balance of upfront cost and energy savings, look for units rated 16-18 SEER. Units 20+ SEER offer maximum efficiency but have higher initial costs. Your HVAC technician can recommend the right SEER for your climate and budget.
Several HVAC-related improvements can boost air quality: replacing filters regularly (every 1-3 months), installing high-efficiency HEPA filters, adding UV air purifiers to your system, having your ducts professionally cleaned every 3-5 years, and installing a whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier to maintain ideal humidity levels (30-50% relative humidity).
